It is the  grant that provides a lifesaving source of income to elderly South Africans who depend on the monthly assistance to cover their basic living needs like food, utilities, transport, and healthcare.

SASSA pays the R2,315 pension grant to those old persons who are qualified and pass the organization’s age, income, and asset deterring criteria. Schedule and Distribution of Payments

Once the payments are made to SASSA every first day of the month, the pension grants are paid to the pensioners which is in accordance with the agency’s standard payment calendar. The grants for older persons are usually disbursed first before disability and child support grants are released. After the payment is performed, the money will be there for the beneficiaries to use. However, it is up to the pensioners when they will withdraw or spend the money as there will be no pressure to do it on the very first day.

Ways of Grant Receipt by Beneficiaries

There are various ways in which pensioners can get the R2,315 grant. These are transferring money directly to the personal bank accounts, using SASSA cards at ATMs or retail shops, and going to the authorized locations to collect cash. SASSA is still the same in its encouragement of the use of bank payments, as they are the most secure and the fastest way of handling the payment—also being more convenient than cash collections.

The Pension Grant for the Elderly Importance

For a lot of older persons living in poverty, the Old Age Pension Grant is the financial lifeline they need. The amount of R2,315 which is paid monthly, provides retirement pensioners with the ability to live at least a minimum lifestyle, to buy only the very first necessities and also to be less of a burden to their families. The grant has an even greater impact now with the skyrocketing prices that it virtually wipes out the elderly being the poorest of the poor financially.

SASSA’s Important Notifications

Beneficiaries are reminded by SASSA to always have their personal and banking information updated so as not to experience any delays or interruptions in receiving their payments. Besides, aged people are also being warned not to fall a victim to scams and misleading information, especially messages that claim to give extra payments or ask for personal information. SASSA keeps the public informed about any changes through its approved communication channels only.
